Looking for change? Then you’ve come to the right place! On behalf of the Officers, Board of Directors and general membership, welcome to the Nevada Airports Association!
Our organization has seen and been a part of some significant changes during its 10-year history. Formerly know as the Nevada Airport Managers Association (NAMA), and formed by a handful of aviation enthusiasts, airport managers, the State of Nevada’s office of aviation planning, and local government elected officials, NAMA was created as a forum for airport managers to exchange ideas, information and personal experience, as well as to promote aviation and educate public officials about how airports benefit their local communities. In 2008, NAMA changed its name to the Nevada Airports Association (NvAA) to encourage the participation of not only airport managers, but also operators and users of Nevada's 49 public-use airports.
An example of our ability to facilitate positive change for Nevada’s airports is the creation of the Aviation Trust Fund. Until 2001, Nevada was the only state with no state level funding assistance program for aviation related projects. NvAA worked successfully with the Nevada State Legislature to establish a trust fund that provides Nevada’s general aviation airports with a source to match FAA funded grants that pay for 95% of an airport improvement project. When the trust fund was created however, there was no appropriation of money to the fund. NvAA continued to work with the State Legislature to allocate money to the fund, and in 2005, a one-time appropriation of $500,000 was authorized by the Legislature. The entire appropriation has been awarded to 18 airports in 11 different counties for various airport improvement projects. The total cost of those projects is valued at over $20,000,000.
However, NvAA is not content with its success, and our efforts to obtain additional funding for Nevada’s airports will continue. We believe that maintaining a safe and efficient system of airports statewide is in the best interest of all Nevadans. We feel that educating our elected officials and their constituents about the economic benefits their communities can reap from a well-maintained and operational airport is critical to securing a sustainable funding source.
NvAA represents ALL of Nevada's airports, and I ask for your help in increasing our membership and pursuing our goals. If you are not yet a member of NvAA, please consider joining us. If you are already a member, please share with others the benefits of membership. It is critically important that our collective voice is heard at both the State Capital and in Washington, D.C.
